Annual Awards Evening 2008

Thursday May 1st was an historic occasion in the educational life of Clonakilty when the local college awards were graced by the presence of  Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy, who was guest of honour.  A native of Timoleague, who received his secondary school education in Saint Mary's College which when merged with the Vocational School formed the Community College in 1980.

College Principal, Anne Dunne, spoke eloquently about Fachtna's career and his achievements as a brilliant Police Officer that he is best known for. Having had a great career he was promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent in 1996 and after the establishment of the Criminal Assets Bureau, in 1999 he was appointed Assistant Commissioner in charge of Human Resources Management.

The Commisioner was presented with the Kevin McCarthy Award and  in response said he felt a great sense of pride inj accepting the Award in honour of a man whom he greatly admired and in an address to the college pupils, he reminded them of the many facilities available to them nowadays but that in order for them to achieve their chose vocation that hard work is required.

He paid a glowing tribute to the Parents and Staff of the College whose leadership and example have placed the name of Clonakilty Community College on such a high pinnacle.

 

Many pupils received endeavour awards and a community award was made to retired principal Paddy Duggan who received a standing ovation in recognition of his great leadership over the past twelve years.
